Protonix (pantoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor used to decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach[7].
Protonix is commonly prescribed for:
- Short-term treatment of erosive esophagitis associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults and children 5 years of age and older[1].
- Maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis and reduction of relapse rates of both daytime and nighttime heartburn symptoms caused by GERD in adults[1].
- Long-term treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a disorder where the stomach produces too much acid[1].
Pantoprazole may also be prescribed for other acid-related conditions as determined by a healthcare provider[2]. It is not for the immediate relief of acute heartburn symptoms[7].
